Nuclear Energy for a Greener Planet

In celebration of World Environment Day WiN YG, hosted a webinar on June 5 under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programm (UNEP).

The webinar, titled "Nuclear Energy for a Greener Planet," commenced with a presentation by Dr. Najat Mokhtar IAEA Deputy Director general. Dr. Mokhtar highlighted the pivotal role of the International Atomic Energy Agency in promoting environmental conservation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, addressing pollutants, and enhancing agricultural practices. She also addressed pressing global challenges such as hunger and malnutrition, emphasizing the IAEA's efforts in ensuring gender equality and empowering women in the fields of nutrition and agriculture.

Following Dr. Mukhtar's presentation, Safa Abdo, a Ph.D. holder in Nuclear Physics and an advocate for environmental sustainability, delivered a presentation titled "Nuclear Energy and Analytical Techniques for Soil Pollution Detection and Prevention." Safa explained the sources of pollution that can contaminate land and discussed nuclear physics-based techniques used for detecting pollutants. She further outlined a Pollution Combating Strategic Plan, concluding with solutions for treating contaminated land through Phytoremediation techniques, underscoring their alignment with UNEP's theme of land restoration for this year.

Subsequently, a panel session was conducted featuring two distinguished panelists, Jhansi Kandasamy, Director of the Net-Zero Program at Idaho National Laboratory, and Princess Mthombeni, Communication Specialist, Africa 4 Nuclear Fonder, and South African coordinator for Stand Up For Nuclear. Their valuable expertise shed light on the significance of environmental conservation and sustainable practices. Jhansi's unique perspective within the nuclear industry resonated with the audience, as she shared her insights and experiences, highlighting the potential for women to excel in leadership roles while effectively managing familial responsibilities.

Princess provided insights on raising awareness and educating the public about the benefits and risks of nuclear energy as a clean energy solution, encouraging more young women to pursue STEM education and consider careers in nuclear energy and sustainable energy fields. An interactive quiz added an engaging element to the discussion, involving the audience in a lively exchange of knowledge.

The webinar was closed with important remarks reflect on the pivotal role of nuclear energy in fostering sustainability, protecting the environment, and addressing critical environmental challenges such as greenhouse gas emissions, agricultural practices, and soil pollution detection.

A Call to Action urged participants to explore and implement innovative solutions for environmental protection and conservation, culminating in a collective commitment to creating a greener planet and a sustainable future.
