COP 28

With over 10 dedicated delegates under the Nuclear for Climate initiative, WiN Global YG proudly played a pivotal role in this momentous occasion. Our engagement took multiple forms, with a primary focus on advocating for nuclear applications and their unmatched benefits as a robust solution to climate change.

Here's an in-depth look at the highlights from our dynamic involvement:

Tripling Nuclear by 2050 Pledge: WiN Global YG, led by Hajar Dinar and Hannah D'Arcy Fenwick MRSC, actively participated in the groundbreaking pledge to triple nuclear power capacity by 2050.

Global Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge: Our voices contributed to global commitments emphasizing renewables and energy efficiency.

WiN Global Middle East Launch: A significant moment unfolded with the launch featuring Muna Al Suwaidi, showcasing the growing influence of WiN Global YG in the Middle East.

Youth Stocktake Outcomes: Gunjan Indauliya, representing WiN Global YG, played a crucial role in presenting the outcomes of the Youth Stocktake, tracking youth inclusion and policy progress.

Our vibrant members were deeply engaged in a spectrum of activities, from panel discussions and the NuclearNetZero Summit to visiting the Barakah Power Plant, holding a WiN Barakah Chapter meet-up at ENEC Headquarters, and co-organizing a compelling UN side event. Larissa Noudem and Gunjan Indauliya had the opportunity to visit the ENEC Headquarters in Abu Dhabi, where they participated in a delightful meet-up hosted by the vibrant WiN Barakah chapter. This occasion facilitated meaningful interactions with the energetic team. The Barakah chapter presented an insightful overview, highlighting the increasing reliance of the UAE on nuclear power. They showcased their impactful social activities within the plant's vicinity, focusing on educating women and the community about nuclear energy. The visit concluded with a tour of the simulator facility and a delightful lunch, providing a wonderful opportunity for further networking and collaboration with the Barakah team.

As we eagerly anticipate the continuation of our COP journey, WiN Global YG remains committed to leading the charge in educating the public about the invaluable benefits of nuclear applications. We proudly stand in solidarity with our partners from Nuclear for Climate, WiN Global, International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC), YOUNGO, and other youth advocate groups.

Nuclear Energy Makes History at COP28

United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) agreement solidified a landmark deal to 'transition away' from fossil fuels. Nuclear energy etched its place in history as COP28 concluded in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

In a remarkable move, the 198 signatory countries to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change officially endorsed the acceleration of low-emission technologies, including nuclear energy, for rapid decarbonization.

This historic development emerged in the 28th paragraph of the Global Stocktake, a comprehensive assessment of the world's progress toward the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The call for nuclear energy's contribution, coupled with the commitment of 25 countries to triple nuclear power capacity by 2050, signifies a significant momentum shift towards clean and reliable energy sources.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi expressed, “Nuclear energy‘s inclusion in the Global Stocktake is nothing short of a historic milestone and a reflection of how much perspectives have changed.”

Voices of our women from COP28

Muna Al Suwaidi, co-coordinator for Nuclear for Climate, shared her thoughts on this monumental event. She expressed her pride in attending COP28 and serving as the co-coordinator for Nuclear for Climate. Now Climate Change Project Manager with the International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC), Muna anticipates exciting future initiatives. Her reflections on the diverse and passionate individuals she encountered during COP28 highlight the global commitment to addressing climate change through nuclear energy. Muna's experience emphasizes the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing for a sustainable future.

Safa Yousef from Egypt had the incredible opportunity to attend COP 28 in Dubai as a WiN Global YG member, gaining access to the blue zone for three days. Reflecting on the experience, she expressed, “This event highlighted nuclear energy as a crucial alternative energy source, and I engaged with distinguished scientists and professionals in the field. Participating in sessions, including a group meeting at the Nuclear for Climate booth with D.G. Grossi, and discussions on ‘Net Zero Future Needs Nuclear Power’ and ‘Fusion and Climate, ITER,’ provided valuable insights. Building connections with young nuclear engineers and advocates was a highlight, and I eagerly anticipate future COP events shaping my career and enhancing my advocacy efforts positively as a WiN Global YG member.”

As COP28 concludes, we celebrate recognizing nuclear energy as a key player in achieving climate goals. The journey continues, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to advocate for a sustainable and cleaner world through nuclear solutions. WiN Global eagerly anticipates the upcoming COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, with plans to amplify our impact. This year, we aim for a bigger and better presence, featuring a pavilion co-organized with WiN Global and a range of events focusing on climate action, gender diversity, and promoting an equitable transition.
